March marks our birth month. And as Phyto Pro turns 11 in 2026, we find ourselves reflecting not just on milestones, but on why we began in the first place.
The health and wellness space can be overwhelming. Marketing noise often drowns out meaningful science. Protein powders promise transformation, yet many are filled with unnecessary bulking agents, inflammatory ingredients, or formulations that prioritise cost over care. For people genuinely trying to improve their health, that creates confusion and sometimes harm.
Phyto Pro was born from a desire to do things differently. Not louder. Not trendier. But better. Naturally.
Our story begins in medicine, not retail. It begins with patients, not products. And it has always been guided by one principle: First Do No Harm. Here’s how that philosophy shaped everything we’ve built.
The Beginning of Phyto Pro: A Functional Medicine Foundation (2010)
In 2010, we opened the first dedicated functional medicine practice in Cape Town.
Our approach combined Western medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine to diagnose and treat chronic lifestyle diseases. We worked closely with patients dealing with inflammation, metabolic imbalances, digestive disorders, and fatigue.
Very quickly, we identified a gap.
- Patients needed:
- A clean, complete protein source,
- All essential amino acids for healing and regeneration,
- Non-inflammatory ingredients, and
- Affordable access.
What existed at the time were either expensive imported options packed with unnecessary fillers or locally manufactured soy and rice proteins that were not suitable for a healing-focused nutritional plan.
The problem was clear. The solution didn’t yet exist.
So we decided to create it.
Creating Our First Medical Shakes with Pea Protein (2012)
In 2012, we formulated our first range of medical foods and shakes for our patients.
At the heart of these formulations was pea protein imported from France, chosen for its clean amino acid profile, digestibility, and suitability for most individuals. It provided a complete protein source without the inflammatory concerns often associated with soy or heavily processed alternatives.
But protein alone wasn’t enough.
- Every ingredient had to:
- Serve a functional, healing purpose,
- Align with human biology, and
- Adhere strictly to our ethos of First Do No Harm.
Nothing was added for marketing appeal. Nothing was included simply to reduce cost. Each formulation was built the way we would design a treatment protocol, intentionally and responsibly.
These products were never meant to be commercial at first. They were designed for real people under our care. And that changed everything.
Entering Retail: When the Community Spoke (2013)
By 2013, something interesting happened.
Our patients began sharing our shakes with friends and family. Demand grew organically within our community. Wellness Warehouse noticed.
We entered the retail market that year, initially packaging our protein shakes in glass bottles. It felt aligned with our clean ethos — but we soon discovered a challenge.
Glass allowed light to degrade active nutrients, accelerating nutrient breakdown and compromising product quality.
So we made a decision.
We moved to stand-up pouches, not because they looked trendier, but because they better protected the integrity of the product. From early on, we learned that doing the right thing often requires adapting.
2015: Phyto Pro Becomes a Stand-Alone Brand
As demand continued to grow, it became clear this was more than an extension of our clinical work.
In 2015, Phyto Pro launched as its own brand.
- The name reflects who we are:
- Phyto – from the Greek word for plant
- Pro – short for professional
Professionals in plant-based nutrition.
Separating the product business from the medical practice allowed us to focus fully on what we were building: clean-ingredient, functional nutrition products rooted in science rather than trends.
- Our commitment remained unchanged:
- Non-inflammatory ingredients,
- Effective formulations grounded in human biology,
- No unnecessary additives, and
- Accessible quality.
Bringing Manufacturing In-House (2018)
Up until 2018, we worked with contract manufacturers to produce our products at retail scale.
But quality challenges began to surface.
While our ingredient sourcing and formulations were tightly controlled, manufacturing variables sometimes fell short of our standards. For a company built on First Do No Harm, that wasn’t acceptable.
So we made a bold decision.
We opened our first manufacturing facility in Cape Town in 2018, starting with just two employees and one production line.
- Bringing manufacturing in-house allowed us to:
- Implement stringent quality control systems,
- Monitor raw material sourcing more closely,
- Ensure consistency in every batch, and
- Maintain the integrity of our pea protein and functional blends.
It was a turning point. We moved from being a brand that designed products to a company that oversaw the full journey from ingredient to finished product.
Organic Growth and Expansion (2022)
Growth at Phyto Pro has never been driven by hype. It has been organic, built on trust and sustained attention to detail.
By 2022, we had outgrown our initial facility. We moved into a larger manufacturing space, expanded our operational team, and strengthened our systems.
- Throughout that growth, our priorities stayed the same:
- Quality ingredient sourcing,
- Truly effective formulations,
- Gold-standard manufacturing processes, and
- Non-inflammatory products suitable for the majority.
In a space often dominated by marketing buzzwords, we focused on biology. We formulated based on how the body actually functions, not on fleeting trends.
Achieving FSSC 22000 Certification (2024)
In 2024, we reached a milestone that reflects our long-term vision.
We achieved FSSC 22000 certification, benchmarking our manufacturing facility against a globally recognised food safety standard (ISO 22000).
This certification aligns our processes with leading manufacturers in the EU, South Korea, and Japan.
What does that mean in practical terms?
- It means that:
- Raw material sourcing follows strict safety protocols,
- Manufacturing processes meet international standards,
- Storage systems preserve product integrity, and
- Quality control is continuously monitored and audited.
For us, FSSC 22000 certification was not about prestige. It was about accountability.
We see ourselves as a South African company with a global outlook and global standards to match.
From Medicine to Food: A Philosophy That Hasn’t Changed
Looking back over 11 years, one thread runs consistently through the story of Phyto Pro:
We started in medicine.
We moved into food.
But the philosophy stayed the same.
“First Do No Harm.”
- That means:
- Avoiding inflammatory ingredients,
- Prioritising digestibility,
- Using clean pea protein as a foundational source,
- Rejecting unnecessary fillers and bulking agents, and
- Making decisions based on long-term health, not short-term sales
In an industry where shortcuts are common, restraint has been our strength.
Why This Still Matters Today
The wellness industry continues to grow rapidly. With that growth comes innovation, but also confusion.
- Consumers today face:
- Overly complex ingredient lists,
- Contradictory health claims,
- Ultra-processed protein alternatives, and
- Marketing-driven formulations.
The need for transparency and functional integrity has never been greater.
Our journey, from a small functional medicine practice in Cape Town to an FSSC 22000-certified manufacturing facility, reflects a simple belief:
Food and nutrition products should support healing, not compromise it. Naturally.
2026: Celebrating 11 Years of Phyto Pro
